Here are the 4 easy steps to complete your registration.
- Check the eligibility criteria
Before applying, review the eligibility criteria for membership.
-
Choose your plan
You can compare the plans available on the Rates page of your city’s website. See also: How can I figure out which plan is right for me?
No matter which plan you choose, you can upgrade at any time. If you can’t decide on the best plan for you, we recommend starting on a plan with a low or no monthly membership fee. This allows you to try the service before committing to a Value plan.
-
Have the required documents on hand
Depending on where you live, the required documents vary. Consult the eligibility criteria to find out what you need to register. Check the eligibility criteria to learn which documents might be required.
-
Fill out the application form
Are you ready? Start your application by clicking the Join Now button or link on the website for the Communauto location where you want to start using the service.

You can compare the plans available on the Rates page of your city’s website. The Trip Calculator can help you compare rates on trips of different lengths and destinations. Generally, if you are driving only once or twice a month, the Open or Open Plus plan (where available) should meet your needs. The Open plan does not require any membership fees. If you drive more frequently, one of the Value plans will be more cost-effective, since they offer the best driving rates. No matter which plan you choose, you can upgrade at any time. If you can’t decide on the best plan for you, we recommend starting on the Open or Open Plus plan. This allows you to try the service before committing to a Value plan. Still not sure? Think about factors such as:
- How often you will make trips
- How many hours each of your trips will be (think of different scenarios)
- How many kilometers you will drive
- If you want to have access to the Workday rate (only available with the Value Extra plan)

Our prices are based on finding a balance between fixed income and variable income. Membership plans with a monthly fee require a minimum term because this assures a certain level of income for our service. The logic is as follows: the greater the fixed portion of the income, the more it is possible for us to offer you lower prices when you use the vehicles, and vice versa.
Members can choose the plan that best suits their transportation needs. To help you make the best choice, see: How can I figure out which plan is right for me?

This is an amount paid for access to certain membership plans, such as the Value Plan. In France, this amount is treated as a security deposit. The refundable membership bond is non-taxable and is fully refunded if the member opts for a membership plan that doesn’t require a membership bond, such as the Open Plan, or terminates their contract.
For membership plans requiring a refundable membership bond, the minimal term is one year in Canada and six months in France. After this time, either party may terminate the membership contract at any time with notice of three months in Canada and sixty days in France. Reimbursement of the membership bond is only permitted after a period of one year in Canada or six months in France.

No. In all branches there are options for joining without a membership bond. Please note that the membership bond is always refundable if you leave the service. It is therefore not a cost, and it allows you to access the service at rates that will provide you additional savings. Plans that require the refundable membership bond are also the ones that allow you to take advantage of lower rates. To find the best option for you, see: How can I figure out which plan is right for me?

To join another branch:
- visit the Communauto website
- choose the location where you plan to use the service
- click on Join Now!
- complete a NEW APPLICATION
- Rates differ between branches, so please consult each branch’s website for local rates.
- Before using vehicles for the first time in another branch, please also read the “Access to vehicles” section at the end of this question.
Rate plan and Damage Protection Plan choice
When you fill out the online application form for the branch where you would like to use vehicles as a guest member, pick the same rate plan and Damage Protection Plan that you have in your home branch (except in Paris, where the form will not ask you to choose a rate plan).Driving Record
If a driving record is required, there is no need to obtain a more recent document or submit a document that you submitted when you first registered. However, as you will not be able to complete your registration if you do not upload a document, you will simply need to re-upload your driver’s license to get around this.Billing
Each branch is independent for billing purposes, so you will receive a separate monthly account statement for your trips made elsewhere. The amount due will be automatically charged to your credit card when due. If you use vehicles in Ontario with a Quebec account, or vice versa, you will not be able to use your credit card at the branch visited. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the monthly invoice to find out how to make your payment.Access to vehicles
Once your registration has been confirmed in another branch, you will be able to access that branch’s vehicles using the Communauto mobile app. However, you will not be able to access vehicles located in “non-communicating” stations with the mobile app (see How do I access vehicles located at “non-communicating” stations (usually underground)?). If it is important for you to access vehicles at these stations, we will need to send you what is necessary because your existing RFID key fob or equivalent will not work in another branch (except for Ontarians visiting Quebec and vice versa). In this case, you should either contact customer service to request that we send you an RFID key fob before your departure.
